The Golden Mean

Today in class we talked about the "Golden Mean", which is a doctrine of Aristotle. The doctrine is a simplified definition that if your not in the universal standard then your not in the mean, mean being the average, being too much or too little on either spectrum is not staying within the mean. As a whole we have universal means, but my question is what really is the universal mean? What is considered being to far on either side of the spectrum?  For example there is a specific regular that comes into work and tips well over twenty percent, example $100-$1,000, sometimes the regular buys extra stuff as well, this regular is extremely nice but only sees specific servers, the regular gets absolutely  nothing out of it. I would consider this being over the mean, what do you guys think?

  1. I do no think that there is, per say, a universal mean. I think the Golden Mean is defined by the individual and in some cases a society with a common culture. The other day I was watching a video where the guy talked about a $130,000 Paper Shredder. I think we can agree that this is a fairly overpriced item, something that could be considered too far on the spectrum towards excess.

  2. There should be a mean in life. There should be a limit to what a person can do, or they will become overwhelmed. Not every time is meant to be done all they time. In fact a cannot think of something that is okay to do too much of. Even of too much water is in taken by a person the can become overly hydrated.
