John, You're so right!

In todays class we discussed the basics of John Rawls and his theory which focuses on justice meaning being fair all the way around. How do we become fair and have justice at the same time? Justice is having the freedom to live a life like other human being  without any issues. Justice could also pertain to respecting others, views, and their first amendment of the constitution. John Rawls in his book pointed out two great principles: The liberty principle and the difference principle. The liberty principle is defined that each person has the equality of rights to the most extensive basic liberties compatible with similar liberties for other. Now what does that mean? John Rawls meant that every human being should have the same rights and be leveled as everyone else. For example in class I made a comment about a healthcare scenario. Everybody in today's society isn't able to afford healthcare and get insurance. According to John Rawls liberty principle, we should make healthcare affordable and available to everyone. If not affordable then make it to where all people can visit medical centers and be helped regardless of their insurance/healthcare situation. Other examples of this principle is having the freedom to vote or run for office without discrimination of race, gender, and sexual preference. Today's society is more focused on what you are and not who you're truly destined to be. The difference principle is defined as the social and economic inequalities are arranged such that: they are the greatest  benefit of the least advantage and are attached to offices that are open to all condition of fair equality of opportunity. A great example of this is the job field. Woman and men can hold the same position and the same  workload. Should they be paid the same salary? Should men be paid more than women because of their gender? In this situation John Rawls would say that both genders should be compensated equally regardless of the gender. Another example is college students in today society. The government gives students the opportunity for students to get an education at the college of their choice but the penalty is taking out loans. Of course the government is aware that college students cant afford to pay for college upfront so they created the loan idea. The loan idea puts college at a disadvantage because when you start paying them back the amount is at least twice the starting rate and can put people further more in to dept. I think in John Rawls perspective would say that college should be affordable  to where students can learn as an advantage in order to live a good a life.

  1. I think you have a good point there, and I like when you say that it should be equal for both gender sides in the work place. It made me think of the radical feminists that blow up everything out of proportion and think they should be treated better then men. It is kinda sad now because feminism used to be such a big strong thing and now just see them as men haters.

  2. Thank you Anna, and I feel like if we fought so hard for the right to vote back in 1920s then why shouldn't everything else become fair and equal. But I'm not only talking about just men and women...I'm also referring to everyone in general.
